CdSe nanowires have been synthesized via vapor-phase growth with and without the use of a metal catalyst. Nanowires produced without a catalyst can be optimized to yield higher quantum efficiency, and narrower and spatially uniform emission, when compared to the catalyst-assisted ones.

Thermally controlled dissociation of bromine from {5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-bromophenyl)porphyrinato}nickel(II) has been employed to form robust, extended covalently bonded porphyrin networks on the Au(111) surface, which are stable up to 800 K and can be recovered after exposure to ambient conditions. Covalent bonds are formed between the phenyl substituents of the porphyrins when the molecular layer is annealed at 525 K.

We probe the density of particle-in-a-box states as a function of particle number for massless two-dimensional (2-D) fermions (single-layer graphene) and massive 2-D fermions (bi-layer graphene) in a phase-coherent Fabry–Perot cavity for electrons. The density of states varies as the square-root of particle number for massless 2-D fermions, and is constant for massive 2-D fermions.

The model system Drosophila melanogaster has been exploited to assess the toxic effects of citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) upon ingestion. We observed a significant in vivo toxicity of AuNPs, which elicited clear adverse effects in treated organisms, such as a strong reduction of their life span and fertility, presence of DNA fragmentation, as well as a significant overexpression of the stress proteins.

BiFeO3 can be templated using a large poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer to produce high quality thin films with both a mesoporous morphology and nanocrystalline framework. These novel materials exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to nontemplated films, which demonstrates that the catalytic properties are largely determined by surfaces and interfaces and not by bulk behavior.
