NiO nanorod arrays on Ni foam combine ultrahigh specific capacitance (2018 F/g at 2.27 A/g), high power density (1536 F/g at 22.7 A/g), and good cycling stability (92% retention over 500 cycles), which improves the reversible capacitance record for NiO by 50% or more, reached 80% of the theoretical value, and demonstrated that a three-dimensional regular porous array structure can afford all of these virtues in a supercapacitor.

The synthesis and self-assembly of tetragonal phase L10-Fe55Pt45 nanorods with high coercive field is described. Monodisperse nanorods with lengths of 60 ± 5 nm and diameters of 2–3 nm were self-assembled in a perpendicular oriented array onto a substrate surface using hexadecylamine as organic spacer. The self-assembled materials are a strong candidate to solve the problem of random magnetic alignment observed in FePt nanospheres leading to applications in ultrahigh magnetic recording (UHMR) systems capable of achieving a performance of the order of terabits/in2.

Morphologies and structures of Co3O4 have been well controlled from nanorods, nanobelts, to nanosheets with sizes ranging from nanometers to micrometers. The as-synthesized samples exhibit excellent performance when employed in supercapacitors, giving higher capacitance and better rate capability than conventional Co3O4 with nanocubic/nanooctahedral morphology.

Atomic-scale structures of graphene segregated on Ni films prior to chemical transfer—including carbon lattices, Moiré patterns due to non-AB stacking, as well as wrinkles and ripples caused by strain effects—have been characterized by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The non-AB stacking characteristics of bilayer graphene were quantitatively established by measuring the Moiré periods and the relative rotation angles in the two carbon layers.
