Oligonucleotide–gold and –silver nanoparticle conjugates with exceptionally high chemical stability have been synthesized by a simple silica reinforcement method. The silica-modified conjugates become highly stable against aggregation induced by ligand exchange reaction (dithiothreitol) as well as dissolution by sodium cyanide.

Bulk heterojunction solar cells have been fabricated by mixing CdS nanowires (CdS NWs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to form a composite film with mutually interpenetrating networks through a simple solution–filtration process, and show up to three orders of magnitude increase in photocurrent and cell efficiency compared to cells with the same materials arranged in a stacked layer configuration with a plain heterojunction.

A high performance asymmetric electrochemical supercapacitor with a mass loading of 10 mg·cm–2 on each planar electrode has been fabricated by using a graphene–nickel cobaltite nanocomposite as a positive electrode and commercial activated carbon as a negative electrode. The capacitor exhibits favorable energy and power densities, and 102% capacitance retention at over 10000 cycles.

Trisoctahedral Au–Pd alloy nanocrystals (NCs) with uniform spatial distributions and different compositions have been prepared under diffusion control. The compositions of the alloy can be tuned by varying the ratio of the precursors in the synthesis mixture. The stoichiometric value of the Au:Pd ratio cannot exceed 3:1, which could be due to the formation of thermodynamically stable Au3Pd phase intermediates. The alloy NCs containing 14.1 atom % Pd exhibit best activity for electrooxidation of ethanol.

We report a simple one-pot green synthesis of chiral gold nanoflowers (GNFs) with abundant petal-shaped tips in a chiral reduction environment resulting from the presence of chiral guanosine 5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP) and the chiral reducing agent L-ascorbic acid (L-AA). Different reducing agents can impact the shape and chirality of the products and the size and chirality of the GNFs can also be controlled by adjusting the reaction time. The as-synthesized GNFs with good biocompatibility can be used for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement, cellular dark-field imaging and photothermal therapy.

Strain modulation and reduction have been achieved in GaN using a carbon nanotube-patterned sapphire substrate (CPSS), and the nanoheteroepitaxy induced by small size nucleation islands of about 50 nm is ascribed to this significant strain modulation. When using CPSS instead of a conventional sapphire substrate, the crystalline quality of GaN was improved and the performance of the light emitting diodes (LEDs) was enhanced.

An new class of yolk/shell nanostructures featuring encapsulation of binary semiconductor–metal (CdSe/CdS/ZnS–Au) hybrid nanocrystals in permeable hollow silica nanospheres have been prepared by taking advantage of aurate hydroxyl complexes [Au(OH)4] simultaneously as an Au precursor for the formation of CdSe/CdS/ZnS–Au hybrid crystals and as a catalyst carrier for the directional Trojan-like inside-out hydrolysis of silica.
